505 Sailing

I went sailing today with my friend Dave Burchfiel on his 505. The 505 is a high performance racing dinghy that is a blast and is the fastest thing I’ve ever sailed. It’s a trapeze boat which means that the crew has a harness that they use to hike out so their entire body is outside of the boat and your feet are on the gunnel. It gets up on plane and really flies. We had about 12 knots of wind this morning which was perfect for our combined weight. I got in the water twice, once while hiking out I thought I was hooked into the trapeze and I wasn’t. I went to hike and ended up actually jumping out of the boat backwards which must have looked pretty silly. The second time we were reaching with the spinnaker and my foot slipped and ended up swinging out on the trapeze and we capsized. The 505 like most boats likes to be sailed flat and it is so light with so much sail that it gets up on plane and really goes. Unfortunately I didn’t take any pictures because I know how much my camera loves the water. Here are some videos of people who are really good. Just imagine that it’s me and Dave, except when they are tacking or jibing. ;)

p1010634.jpgGot back from Boston this weekend. I went down for Matt and Johanna’s engagement party which was a great excuse to go up and catch up with everyone up there. I stayed with Ryan, Jenny and Reaves at their beautfiul mansion in Sherborn. Reaves is a great kid and I was really overdue in meeting him. I can’t believe that it’s been that long since I’ve been to Boston and how big he is already. I met up with Melvin on Saturday and he took me around MIT’s campus and the inner workings of their business and engineering schools. If I were living in Boston I would definitely stop by the engineering school’s garbage dock regularly because they throw away the coolest stuff! Saturday night was the engagement party which I went to with Jenny. Jenny just started working as an analyst in the health care industry working crazy hours right now. The party was at Paul and Carla’s and they put on an great show as usual.
Oh while I was there the Red Sox won the World Series and BC won a really exciting football game as well as the Pat’s continuing their domination of the NFL. Great week to be a sports fan in Boston.

It was great to see Matt and Jo lastly. The wedding should be pretty cool from what I have heard. Ryan is going to preside, and Sam and I will be groomsmen with Jo’s sister as maid of honor. Bachelor party planning has already begun!
